Management of Visitors as sources of infection

Health care organization is a place to admit patients for treatment and because of that the patients usually are visited by family members, friends, colleagues…etc. that usually encouraged by clinicians to support the social and psychological aspects of the patients but Infection can be easily cross transmitted from visitors to patients (and Vice Versa) e.g. pertussis, M. tuberculosis, influenza …etc. so a clear policy for effective method to screen visitors has to be created in each health care facility especially if we are speaking about community outbreak or pandemic e.g. MERS-CoV if they will visit high risk patient’s e.g. patient under chemotherapy, or patient receiving immunosuppressant

In certain situations like in maternity hospital people are happy to welcome new family members so a lot of visitors are going to visit the delivered mother also in appears in many other units’ e.g.  ICU , Pediatric units…etc. but control measures for children if they will go to visit the patient in the way they have to visit only there sibling and they have to be screened for childhood common infectious diseases especially respiratory infections

Educational materials for cough etiquette and respiratory hygiene e.g. signs, pamphlets video presentation in the hospital corners can be considered an effective way to eliminate such visits as a passive screening by educating the visitors for the situation that suppose they shouldn’t visit the patient others facilities can introduce active screening method via questionnaire asking about recent exposure to infectious pathogens and the symptoms of that

As the infection can be transmitted from the visitor to the patient also it can be transmitted from the patient to the visitors so proper precautions need to be applied for visitors if they will visit patient with pulmonary tuberculosis or pertussis the visitors has to be screened for the history of exposure or immunization .

In certain situation the hospital couldn’t stop symptomatic visitors for visiting the patient for the terminally ill patients visited by a primary family member so the visitor should be educated about the use of personal protective equipment’s and s/he has to wear mask all the time inside the health care facility and not to make rounds in the hospitals only stay beside the patient for the duration of the visit and avoid contacting other patients with frequent cleaning the hands using alcohol based hand rub as the easiest method of hand cleaning (unless it is visibly soiled)

The other PPE e.g. gown and gloves is encouraged in case of visiting patient under contact isolation e.g. MDRO and no beneficial for using it as a standard for visiting all patients
